A New Light Comes to Market Square
The retail spaces in Market Square
have been undergoing quite a change lately. The square is getting a facelift,
as anyone who drives down Main Street may have noticed. Workers are perched on
scaffolding, as stucco is removed and stone installed. Chain link litters the
sidewalk just behind the bright orange caution tape. The exteriors are not the
only things undergoing change.
Within the shops on Market Street, a
new light shines from the once-empty windows at Number Twelve. The flickering
light of dozens of candles and the delicious aroma of green apple and cinnamon
spice herald Dragon Eye Candles. The owner, Cara Mackiewicz of Dallas, makes
all her candles, scented oils, and hand-dipped incense on-site, in a neatly
arranged room full of melting pots, fragrance oils, and paraffin wax.
Like many of the specialty
businesses you may find in Market Square on market days, Cara originally
started mixing her delightful aromatic products in her home kitchen and selling
online and in local markets. In February of 2014, she decided she was ready for
a change, and found the available shop in Market Square. She began her retail
location with a Square card reader for her iPhone and a borrowed folding table.
Now, the shop has several nicely
dressed tables full of candles and incense grouped by fragrance collection, a
boutique room of specialty aromatherapy supplies and handmade jewelry, and a
display case of beautiful custom-made candle holders. Cara has also upgraded
her point of sale system, and she excitedly points out some of its unique
functions. Customers can pay with systems like Square Market accounts and
Paypal through her digital point of sale system.
In the coming months, she is hoping
to expand to include custom home spa therapies and perfumes. You can find
Dragon Eye Candles in the Market Square Monday through Saturday, and at the
Market Days on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings June through October.
